Born in 1954 in Kolkata, West Bengal, she graduated from the University of
Calcutta in 1975 and later pursued her studies at the Government College
of Art & Craft and the College of Visual Arts, Kolkata, in 1980. Working
across painting and sculpture, Bhattacharya’s practice is deeply informed by empathy, cultural memory, mythology, and the nuances of everyday
life. Her works often portray women, labourers, and ordinary individuals
with sensitivity and emotional depth, revealing the dignity and resilience
embedded within lived experience.
